One executive accountable for the change

Interim Transformation Director

An interim transformation director is a senior executive appointed for a fixed term, usually six to eighteen months, to lead a major business transformation on behalf of the board and be accountable for its outcome: the new operating model, the systems, the ways of working and the benefits. A fractional transformation director does the same part-time, typically two to three days a week.

Intology provides both. Every engagement is led by one named executive who has run transformations from the board through to the delivery floor. Intology holds no vendor partnerships or implementation revenue, so integrators and suppliers are held to account rather than protected.

Transformation director or programme director

Both roles matter on a major change. They are accountable for different things.

On smaller programmes one senior executive often holds both. Where the need is programme leadership capacity, see programme management consultancy.

When an interim transformation director is the right call

  • The board has committed to a transformation and nobody below the CEO owns the outcome
  • A new operating model, ERP or finance platform, or post-acquisition integration is too big for day-job leadership
  • A private equity sponsor needs the value creation plan turned into a funded, sequenced transformation
  • Integrators and suppliers are setting the agenda and the business needs someone senior on its side
  • A transformation is under way but benefits are slipping and confidence is falling
  • The business needs a transformation led now and a permanent leader developed to take it on

If what you need is a fast independent view of a programme rather than a leader, an assurance review may be the better first step.

What an interim transformation director owns

Outcome and mandate

A board-approved outcome statement, success measures and decision rights, so everyone knows what the transformation is for.

Design and sequencing

The target operating model and a sequenced roadmap the business can absorb, with the dependencies made visible.

Governance and decisions

Executive governance that makes decisions at the right gates, and board reporting that tells the truth early.

Integrators and suppliers

Statements of work enforced, change requests governed and commercial leverage protected at executive level.

People and adoption

Leadership alignment, role design and adoption planned and resourced from the start. See the Embedded Change Model.

Benefits and handover

Benefits tracked to the numbers in the business case, and the transformation handed to permanent leadership by design.

Interim transformation director for private equity

Private equity sponsors appoint an interim transformation director to turn a value creation plan into a funded programme and lead it through to measurable results within the hold period. See business transformation for private equity and post-merger integration.
