Project management consulting careers at Intology

Intology is an independent UK management consultancy with more than 15 years of trading, over 100 programmes delivered, and more than 50 clients. We help organisations deliver transformation, recover troubled programmes, and make important decisions about how they operate.

A career here differs from a large firm. There is no pyramid to climb and no bench to sit on while someone else finds the right assignment. Senior practitioners take responsibility for the work and stay close to the people making the decisions.

Intology does not advertise named vacancies. We work from speculative approaches, building a trusted group of people whose judgement and delivery experience are known before a client need arises.

What the work actually involves

This is work where a consultant takes accountability for a programme rather than simply reviewing one. Intology practitioners work embedded inside the client organisation, close enough to understand what is happening in the delivery line and senior enough to act when a decision cannot wait.

The work can involve programme assurance, where an independent view gives a board confidence about risk, governance, scope, cost, and delivery. It can involve programme recovery, where the immediate task is to stabilise a failing programme, establish the facts, and create a credible route back to delivery. It can also involve ERP implementation and system selection, change management, M&A, and post merger integration.

The common thread is accountability for outcomes, not accountability for producing a report. Intology uses the Embedded Change Model to put senior practitioners inside the client team, transfer capability as the work progresses, and leave the organisation more capable when the engagement ends. That is the practical difference between advising on a programme and helping it move.

How this differs from a large firm consulting career

In a traditional pyramid model, partners sell work and junior associates deliver much of it. That model has a place in the market, but it is not how Intology staffs client engagements. Intology operates a senior-only model. It does not use offshore delivery teams and does not resource client engagements with junior associates.

For a consultant, that means no leverage targets and no utilisation-driven staffing onto work you are not right for. It means direct client contact from day one, clear responsibility for the outcome, and no layers between you and the decision maker. The work is demanding because the responsibility is real, but it is also more honest: the person introduced to the client is the person expected to contribute.

This is not a claim that large firms cannot do good work. It is a statement about the environment Intology has chosen. The difference is set out in more detail in our comparison of independent and large-firm transformation consulting.

What we look for

Intology looks for substantial delivery experience at programme or transformation level. That includes the ability to operate credibly in a boardroom, tell a client something they do not want to hear when it matters, and remain useful when the facts are incomplete. Recovery situations are rarely tidy, so comfort with ambiguity and the judgement to find the next sensible decision matter as much as a polished methodology.

PRINCE2, MSP, APM, and PMP can all be useful. They show familiarity with recognised disciplines, but a demonstrable delivery track record matters more than a list of qualifications. Programme management careers at Intology are built on what someone has delivered, how they behaved when delivery became difficult, and whether clients trusted them with the next decision.

Independence and trust define how Intology works with clients. Anyone joining must hold both. Independence means being willing to give an evidence-based view without a vendor, implementation, or internal career agenda behind it. Trust means doing what was agreed, being clear about what is not known, and keeping the client close to the decisions that shape the work.

How engagements are resourced

The senior-only model does not mean that every person involved in every engagement is an Intology employee. Richard Keenlyside leads engagements personally. Where an engagement needs specialist capability beyond that, Intology brings in named associates it has worked with before, and agrees that involvement with the client in advance.

This is an associate model based on trust rather than a staffing pool assembled under time pressure. The people brought in are known for their judgement, delivery standards, and ability to work alongside a client team. They are not anonymous capacity placed behind a senior name.

That is why speculative CVs matter. Intology is building a bench of people already known and trusted, so that a future need can be met with care rather than a rushed search. A strong approach may not lead to an immediate conversation about a role, but it can establish the relationship that makes the right engagement possible later.

How to apply

Send a CV through the Join page, with a short note about the work you have done and the work you would like to do. It is reviewed personally. Intology will be straight about whether there is a likely fit rather than keeping people warm indefinitely.

CVs are held under a documented consent and retention policy. Candidate information is retained for 12 months from the date it is received and then deleted unless you ask for earlier removal or another lawful reason applies. The full policy is set out in the Privacy Policy.

Questions about consulting careers at Intology

What qualifications do you need for a project management consulting career?+

Intology consultants work across financial services, manufacturing, public sector, healthcare, professional services, retail, and technology. The common factor is complex change where senior judgement and delivery accountability matter.

How long does it take to hear back after sending a CV?+

Intology reviews speculative CVs personally and will be straight about whether there is a likely fit. The response time depends on the volume and relevance of approaches, but the aim is to avoid keeping people warm indefinitely.
